Urine mouthwash in ancient Rome

I have had a few entries on teeth and yes, this one is going to touch on the similar body part. From the ancient time, teeth have always been an important asset of beauty. Some might have them chiseled, blackened, or whitened, and in this entry, it's about the method used by ancient Romans to keep their teeth clean and beautiful. How? Well, as what the title of this entry brings to you, they use urine as mouthwash.

Before the invention of modern dental technology, (well, before there are Listerine, Sensodyne, Colgate, Darlie, Mu'min, etcetera) could you imagine how people take care of their teeth? For the ancient Romans, they had the solution- the urine of Portuguese people. So gross, isn't it?

Urine mouthwash contains ammonia that is good for disinfection

Jars of urine were shipped in from Portugal to Rome because they thought that it was a more powerful cleansing agent than home-grown Roman urine. Hehe, I myself wonder as well, how did those Romans' urine differ from the Portugueses' *winkwink*

It's said, though that the ammonia in urine is actually good for disinfection, and it continued to be used as an active ingredient in mouthwash until at least the 18th century.

Well, I guess, one wishes to do almost anything for beauty.

Ps: What if they accidentally swallow the urine while mouthwashing? Euwww.
